Dave Decat, illustrator and poster designer from Brussels, has been working tirelessly since the beginning of the 2000s, the colorful world of mobsters he magnifies : it is the criminal gangs of Paris Belle Époque, the Apaches who were willing to show up and parade, tattooed thugs.
It is in this coded and stylized world that Decat draws his ideas and the material imaginary portraits he makes. He is inspired by Anatole Steinlen or imagery conveyed by newspapers of the time such as Le Petit Journal. To enrich his universe, the draftsman also drew on references literature and cinematographic works that he makes his own as Du rififi chez les hommes of Auguste le Breton, a classic of detective literature or Bob le flambeur of Jean-Pierre Melville which he digested and reinterpreted the codes. Always fascinated by the freaks, the marginalized and the excluded of all Dave Decat also dedicated his work to those who were called "Loubards" in the 1980s or even fans of heavy metal rock.
The book is divided into thematic chapters that follow each other following chronological order of Dave Decat's creations. We will also find at the end of this volume a text in which the artist shares his story, his journey and his creative approach while giving the keys to his graphic universe. We gradually slip into a gallery of portraits, real "faces" represented with palpable empathy. An interest for a world that we discover and curiosity for the particular universe created by Decat is maintained. The work of the artist is declined on supports as varied as the poster, the drawing, the record sleeve or the book cover. Yet his precise and unique style is of obvious consistency and will succeed to seduce and create an obvious empathy or a real affection for this character gallery.
